Five Ring of Honor Wrestlers That WWE Needs
Posted by Jeffery Baker
#5: Jimmy Jacobs
While I absolutely think that the “Zombie Princess” name should be done away with, I do think there’s a place in WWE for a character who is confused about his sexuality. With the Be A Star campaign in full effect right now, it could be a huge move for WWE to finally utilize a gay or at least questioning character, and not have him be a joke. Maybe this won’t happen until HHH is in the driver’s seat, but I think sooner or later it needs to happen, and I think Jimmy Jacobs could do a great job playing that role.
#4: The Briscoe Brothers
Forgive me for using Jay and Mark as one unit, but in all seriousness, that’s what they are. These two are easily the most entertaining part of a ROH show. They are unbelievably funny both on the mic and in the ring, as well as tough as nails both on the mic and in the ring. Not to mention, the Jay and Mark you see on ROH TV are, from what I understand, pretty reflective of how they are in real life, which always makes for a more believable character. In a dream world, imagine this … Jack Swagger wins the world title at WM29. The night after on RAW, Zeb & Jack come out and celebrate. They talk about how this is Jack Swagger’s America and that it’s about time that “We The People” started to show more support. So they walk around the ring and they ask the audience who is ready to be a part of Jack Swagger’s America. Lo and behold, two “fans” dressed in camo are in the front row, and ready to join up. They would fit PERFECTLY into this faction! They could easily have a run as the tag-team champions, or they could run as a three-man team and feud with the Shield or “Team Canada” (Jericho, Christian, Rami Sebei [I'll get to that next]), “Team Europe” (Sheamus, Barrett, and Cesaro), or Team Mexico (Del Rio, Sin Cara, Mysterio [I know he's not from Mexico]). I would love to watch a program like that, plus if WWE were to do shows in any of those places, there would be SUPER heat for “We The People”. Alright, back to reality. Even without Swagger, these two would be an amazing addition to the WWE roster. They have the laugh-factor that WWE management likes, and the in ring skills that the die hard fans would love to watch. Plus they’ve got a hashtag, WWE loves hashtags right now.
3. El Generico
Alright, so I know Rami Sebei has already signed a contract with WWE developmental and has been working NXT shows, BUT it’s as Rami Sebei, and I think that “El Generico” has a place in WWE. Back to dreamland, after losing to “We The People” as a part of Team Canada, Rami is torn apart with the need for revenge. Maybe they put him on the shelf, maybe they cost him a title-shot, something more serious than the other members of Team Canada. So while WTP has moved on and is feuding with Team Mexico, maybe they “injure” Rey, Sin Cara, or Del Rio and Rami is there to help him through his injury. A PPV match is booked for Team Mexico vs WTP and WTP is down one man because (let’s just say) Rey is injured. Well everyone’s wondering if Rey will be able to compete, WTP comes out at the PPV waiting for the match to start. Team Mexico comes out with Rey (on crutches). They stop at the bottom of the ramp and Rey says he won’t be able to compete but he’s found someone to take his place. While he’s been helping Rey rehab his injury, Rey has been teaching him the way of the Luchador. “OLE!” Out comes Rami as El Generico. People would lose it! I would lose it! Then it could be a reoccurring thing where El Generico would appear on select occasions like Mick Foley’s alter egos. He has such an “unlikely hero” way about him that I think the WWE audience would love it.
2. Jay Lethal
This guy is undoubtedly the best impersonator I’ve ever seen in pro-wrestling. If you’ve never seen him do Macho Man or Ric Flair, do yourself a favor and check it out. I personally love anytime one wrestler imitates another, I think it’s one of the most entertaining things in wrestling. Lethal could easily get over with WWE fans by doing this. But I really think WWE needs Jay because he’s a black wrestler without a stereotypical black gimmick. He doesn’t come out and rap, he doesn’t come out and steal things, and he’s not a sports star, he’s not a “jamaican”, he’s not a witchdoctor or a savage from Africa. Mark Henry is a lonely man being the only black man on the WWE roster that isn’t portrayed like a cartoon character, and that’s pretty sad. I’m leaving Big E out of this because he hasn’t done much but stand around so far. Jay Lethal’s ring work is top notch. I’ve seen him wrestle on a few occasions and he easily had the best match of the night (use the internet to find the ROH 2012 Survival of the Fittest tournament and watch his match with Davey Richards) without doing crazy high-flying moves. It wasn’t until recently that I heard much serious mic work from him, but he’s great at cutting promos as well. The guy is absolutely as well rounded as a wrestler can get, there’s no reason that he shouldn’t be a part of WWE.
1. Kevin Steen
The Ring of Honor World Champion Kevin Steen. This guy is the ROH champion for a reason. I’ve never seen anyone as big as this guy, move as fast and take as many risks as this guy. Right now, I think that’s something that WWE really lacks. They have jacked guys, tall guys, skinny guys, short guys, and they have fat guys that dance, but they don’t have any fat guys that can give a match like Kevin Steen can. Don’t get me wrong Kevin Steen isn’t just good for being a big guy … he is an amazing wrestler period. This is one of the very few wrestlers that is legitimately intimidating when he cuts a promo. He has a very creepy way about him and he doesn’t do it wearing some kind of crazy outfit, the guy is scary wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and shorts. He calls himself “wrestling’s worst nightmare” for a reason. I could see Kevin showing up and taking the place of a guy like Brock Lesnar, or CM Punk, or even Stone Cold. A guy who would show up, destroy something or someone and leave. He could easily be the next character to have the cops called on him and taken away in hand-cuffs. He is as good as heels get. This guy could easily be the next breakout star of WWE if he was given the chance.

Great article I totally agree with most of your picks but I would replace Jay Lethal with either Davey Richards or Eddie Edwards
Haha I do love Davey Richards but it was hard for me to justify why WWE needs him right now.
awesome dude! I like to see El Generico come in with his mask and help maybe restart the cruiserweight division and bring back the title.
Yeah in a real fantasy land that would be incredible!!!
The only way I can see Davey Richards make it in WWE is if they team him up with Daniel Bryan. Regardless of what those of us “serious” wrestling fans say, it is very difficult for smaller wrestlers to make it, especially in a big promotion.
I have only been watching ROH for about six months now, having stumbled across it while channel surfing late one night. Kevin Steen works with a small promotion like ROH, but I just can’t see him getting over with the WWE fans. I think he would have to water his gimmick down too much. The comparison to Austin makes sense with his current persona, but I am sure we are all well aware that McMahon would change that.
Jay Lethal… Now that one is right on the money: Great worker and a very likeable character.
I agree that something would have to be done with his character for WWE fans to care at first. But once someone like Punk is gone I think the fans will be dying for a character like Steen.
The problem is that he's a lot like a Tommy Dreamer to me, he's a not so built big guy. You don't need to be a bodybuilder, but we all see how Dreamer worked out in the big pond.
Don't forget that Lethal's former TNA Tag Champ partner is already in NXT the formerly Consequences Creed
I actually wasn't aware of that … that's awesome though!
