For those of you who have read any of my previous articles on this site, you have probably realized that I miss the good ol’ days. The thrills that came before there was an IWC filled with so many of us who claim to be experts in an industry that we simply watch on television and read about on the Internet. Before we were running around claiming to be “smart,” we were just fans, and we knew when we watching something that was going to make an impact.
#5.) Y2J debuts on Raw
The fact that he signed with WWE is not all that shocking. This was shocking and monumental because it happened during the Rock’s promo. Most of us had already figured out that Chris Jericho would be the result of the Y2J countdown, but no one, and the Steven means NO ONE, interrupted the Rock when he was delivering one of his promos. A mid-card wrestler with WCW, Jericho would be given a main event push that no one thought he would ever receive, let alone capitalize on that has led to him being considered as one of the greatest of all-time.
#4.) The Montreal Screw Job
Few events have had such a lasting effect on the world of professional wrestling than that night in Montreal. The walls of kayfabe came crashing down with a crash hear around the wrestling world. No matter whose side you took, it is nearly impossible to debate that this event led to WWE moving ahead while Bret Hart’s wrestling career (and life in general)started its downward spiral.
#3.) The Sale of WCW
We all knew WCW was getting harder and harder to watch. The storylines had gotten so ridiculous that it became painfully obvious that they were just trying whatever they could to at least garner some attention. In a way, WCW had become an embarrassment when compared to its height reached just a few years prior. Many fans, myself included, were excited over the prospect of seeing so many Dream Matches that would now be available as a result of this. We all KNEW we were watching the changing of the wrestling landscape. What we didn’t know, was that this would be one of the biggest examples of how WWE can really drop the ball when handed an infallible opportunity at greatness. What we got was just a bunch of poorly executed heel turns with no rationale.
#2.) The Birth of ECW
When Shane Douglas threw down the NWA World Heavyweight championship, there was a collective dropping of jaws. Considered by most to be the most respected wrestling organization, the NWA lost virtually all respect when Douglas declared it a dead title. When a worldwide organization puts their championship belt on someone with a well-known hatred for their company, it is hard to feel sorry for them being betrayed. By declaring himself as the ECW World Champion, Shane Douglas was at the center of ECW’s growth as a third option for wrestling fans. ECW’s impact is still felt today, as we would not have had the influx of Mexican Luchadores, hardcore wrestling, edgy storylines, or work/shoots that have become common today.
#1.) The N.W.O.
Take your pick with this one. Was it Scott Hall coming through the crowd at the very beginning? Or was it Hulk Hogan’s heel turn at Bash at the Beach that changed the course of wrestling in the 90′s? Whichever one you want to go with, the answer is a resounding “YES!” Even if we were smart enough to know that Scott Hall couldn’t really be on WCW programming while employed by WWE, but we couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. WCW became must-see television because they had done what had not been done in a long time: They shocked us. And then what do they do to top it off? They pull off another shocker with the Hogan heel turn. We had been bored with Hogan as a face for years, but he was Hulk Hogan. There was no way the Hulkster would ever turn into a bad guy. We were wrong, and (as a result) he actually became popular again.
Well, there you have it. That’s my Top 5 Mark Out Moments. A few Honorable Mentions go to the following:
