Let’s go back a few weeks… Remember what the plan was going into Extreme Rules?
You know, the plan involving Dolph Ziggler, Big E Langston, and A.J. Lee?
C’mon, the plan that got squashed when Jack Swagger gave Ziggler a concussion?
In case you don’t remember, the plan was to have Big E Langston challenge Kofi Kingston for the U.S. Title and win. In addition, A.J. Lee was going to challenge Kaitlyn for the Divas Title… And win. This would have resulted in the “Ziggler Faction” all being champions: Ziggler, World Heavyweight Champion – Langston, U.S. Champion, – A.J., Divas Champion.
Unfortunately for Langston and A.J. (and Ziggler for that matter), Zigs was forced to take some time off. This changed everything. It may have actually changed everything for the better, at least The Shield would say it did. We instead saw Dean Ambrose pin Kingston for the U.S. Title. Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns captured the Tag Team Championship from Team Hell No. Thus The Shield was gilded with the U.S. and Tag Titles, and deservedly so. I much prefer this angle as opposed to going the “Freebird” or “Demolition” route, meaning any combination of two of the team members would defend the Tag Titles, as was originally planned. (Bonus points for you if you recall that Ziggler was once involved in such rule).
Now, let’s get back to the present. Again the Concussion Monster reared it’s ugly head. Fandango saw his Intercontinental Championship chances vanish in a match versus Zach Ryder. This caused the Triple Threat match; that was originally scheduled to feature Wade Barrett, The Miz, and Fandango to be re-imagined. Within minutes, it went from Barrett-Miz-Fandango to Barrett-Miz to Barrett-Miz-Curtis Axel. Don’t get me wrong, Axel getting the IC Title intrigues me. After all, his dad “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig was one of the best IC Champions of all time. But, I think another option could have been explored.
WWE Payback, Ziggler is facing Alberto Del Rio. I expect a title defense. A.J. is challenging Kaitlyn. I expect A.J. to win. What if instead of Curtis Axel being the alternate for the IC Triple Threat, what if it was Big E Langston? The original plan, prior to Extreme Rules, could be revisited. And it would actually be even better. The Shield would hold their titles, and the “Ziggler Faction” would suddenly also all wear gold.
Fandango’s and Axel’s time will come. And I’m looking forward to it. However, this is the best chance WWE has to put belts on Ziggler, Langston, and A.J. before the group gets bland. And it can be done while continuing The Shield program. I am curious as to what you all think about this. Feel free to comment or tell me I’m insane. I look forward to hearing your reaction.
Lastly, for God’s sake Curtis… Spit out and hit the gum!!
