A Shield Turn Is Best For Business

If you missed this past Raw, then you missed a very exciting event for the WWE Universe. Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns a.k.a. The Shield, finally made the inevitable face turn against Kane. The segment featured Kane calling out Jerry Lawler as an accomplice to the Occupy Raw movement that occurred last week. As punishment, Kane ordered to have The Shield corner Jerry Lawler so he could attack him. Before this punishment could be delivered, Seth Rollins got on the mic and told Jerry lawler that they always do what is best for business. This resulted in the official Shield turn, as they attacked Kane and saved Jerry Lawler. So why exactly is this best for business?

A face turn freshens up the faction. Remember, The Shield debuted November 18th, 2012 at Survivor Series. For over a year, they have been stopping injustice in the WWE the only way a heel faction can. By taking out all the top faces of the company. People like John Cena, Sheamus, CM Punk, Big Show, and even Undertaker. Ambushes and gang attacks were a common thread in these interactions. Over time they won championships, and developed unique personalities and move sets. Minus an excellent mini feud with The Wyatt Family, The Shield have fallen from their top spot as the feared trio of terror. With a face turn they can refresh a tired faction. I am not saying that the group is boring by any means, but who else has The Shield fought against as villains? Now we can see them take on the top bad guys in the business. Besides they are already a crowd favorite, it only makes sense to turn them at this point.

This new face turn fills a void left in the WWE. With CM Punk walking out on WWE, the company needs a new anti-hero. Why not make that new anti-hero, anti-heroes. The Shield already have that edge needed to be self-serving; yet, cool enough to still have the fans behind them. They look apart from the typical mold, and each member brings their own version of this unique flare. Dean Ambrose has the dark brooding and mentally unhinged personality. It attracts audiences to see what his character will do next. Seth Rollins is the talented rocker rebel. Always willing to say and do what he needs to win. Roman Reigns is the silent and deadly beast. Uncontrolled and completely adored by the fans. Can you imagine the carnage this group could bring as a face faction? We would continue to get the same quality gang like hi-jinks and wrestling, but under a new creative direction. How about a new angle on The Authority story line, with The Shield fighting against them this time. All possible with this new turn in creative direction.

This face turn means that we don’t have to see The Shield break up just yet. I doubt anyone has hated the run of The Shield, and I for one am glad to see that it won’t be ending anytime soon. For one thing, this ensures that Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns won’t get lost in the shuffle. Right now they are stronger as a group than as individuals. I am not saying that they couldn’t make it on their own; in fact, just the opposite. I think they all have very bright futures in WWE, but WWE is on the cuffs of having a great problem. They are heavy handed with talent, and not enough time to push everyone equally. I would list the superstars who are main event worthy already, but that would be too long and unnecessary. Just watch NXT, or look at the superstars already entered into the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal. This is a great problem to have, and WWE needs to figure out how to work with their roster. Until then, The Shield should stay together so they don’t get lost in the crowd, because I want the best programming from these three men I can get for as long as I can get. If they get lost in the shuffle that could be a year or two of top-quality programming we miss out on.

If you couldn’t tell from the article, I am very happy about this new direction of The Shield. I wasn’t opposed to a Triple Threat Match between the members at WrestleMania 30, but this is a win-win situation for all involved. It looks like they will be involved with a program with Kane at the grandest stage of them all, and this could lead to them getting involved in The Authority angle as well; except, on the side of good this time. I am excited to see how far these great talents can run with this ball before they have to split and move on to be the world champions we all know they are capable of becoming.

Great article! The Shield reminds me of Marvel Comics’ The Punisher. He believes in justice, retribution and doesn’t show mercy like most heroes. Their face turn is just awesome. I don’t wanna see them break up; but really can’t wait for them to get singles titles (US title clearly excluded)
