Summerslam Look Back 2011: Summer of Punk

Summerslam 2011 cena vs punk

2011 was the last time I attended Summerslam. It was marked the third year in a row that I attended and this show was awesome. A few key things happened in 2011. First right after Wrestlemania Edge had to retire. This opened the door for Christian to become World Heavyweight champion which he was heading into Summerslam. Also probably the biggest thing to happen in 2011 was CM Punk’s pipebomb promo on the Raw in Vegas. Needless to say I was excited for this Summerslam. Punk had returned has the WWE champion to face John Cena. Christian was defending against Orton and Daniel Bryan was facing Wade Barrett. I couldn’t wait to get to the arena to buy the new CM Punk T-shirt.

As I write this I put the event on the network so I can remember absolutely everything and talk about the highs and lows. First I will mention a couple of lows. I absolutely hate when WWE has performances on their shows for no reason. I enjoy a wrestler coming out to a live band but if an artist is just going to be there to sing, then I hate it! Well at Summerslam 2011 Cee Lo Green performed. A couple of Divas came out to join him and danced awkwardly next to him. The crowd was dead and didn’t care. It was a complete waste of time.

The next low is sort of my fault. During the Diva’s Title match which was Beth Phoenix vs Kelly Kelly, I went to use the restroom and refill my drink. Well the line to refill the drink was super long so not only did I miss the diva’s match, which was intended, I also missed the next match which was Daniel Bryan vs Wade Barrett. I was so mad! That was one match I was looking forward to seeing.

I have always been a huge Christian fan. I was so happy when he finally won the World Title. In the summer of 2011 he was in a feud with Randy Orton for the title. If I recall correctly I believe the title changed hands a couple of time between those two. HHH made this match a no DQ match, which made this more exciting. Rumors start to run wild about Edge returning to Summerslam to help Christian. Edge went on some media outlets to even say that he would Not be at Summerslam. When Christian came out he introduced his plan to retain the title and it was his best friend… EDGE! The pop was huge! Edge eventually turned his back on Christian because he didn’t like how Christian had been acting. So fun to be able to see Edge before he left for good.

Christian vs Orton

The Christian Orton match was brutal. These guys pulled out all the stops. Christian viscously hit Orton with a kendo stick. They battle through the crowd, all over ring side, used a table, and even the steps came into play. This match was an exciting one to be there for. My friends and I were rooting for Christian and the rest of the arena was going for Orton. Randy even hit an RKO through the announce table! A “This is awesome” chant got started. It’s always fun to be in the crowd for that chant. Christian eventually got knocked off the ring apron with a by a chair shot from Orton that sent Christian through a table. I forgot how much of a beating Christian took in this match. He was then powerslammed through a table that was leaning against a turnbuckle and then received the hangman DDT onto a trashcan. Orton won the match by using a RKO onto the steps when Christian tried to do a crossbody off the second rope! I couldn’t believe the match that I had just witnessed.

The John Cena vs CM Punk I will never forget. These are my two favorite wrestlers of the current era. The Money in the Bank match these two guys had was amazing. One of the greatest matches in the past couple of years. This match is still talk about today. Sitting here talking about it, it’s hard to think that was three years ago. From the beginning of this event, not the match, but from the moment they let people in the door the crowd was hot. “Let’s go Cena, CM Punk,” chants filled the building as we waited for the show to start.

What I remember most about this match was the atmosphere of the crowd. It was the most amazing thing I have ever been a part of during a wrestling event to that point. The only thing I think that would rival this experience was seeing Jericho’s surprise return at the Royal Rumble 2013. This was another outstanding match from these two wrestlers. I think it was more special to in the live crowd. CM Punk got the victory and the crowd went crazy! The events that happened next I couldn’t believe.

Kevin Nash came through the crowd and Jackknife Powerbombed CM Punk. Then out of nowhere Del Rio’s music hits and here he comes with the MITB briefcase and a ref. I was so mad. CM Punk had just won, I was on top of the world, it was so exciting, and then when Del Rio came out and pinned Punk I sunk into my chair and just sat there with a look of disbelief, I didn’t say anything to anyone.  California, especially southern California has a big Latino population so I understand why the WWE did the cash in. Del Rio actually got a decent reaction from the crowd on the cash-in.

The funniest part of this was my friend, who is Latino, came to the event with me and was a huge Del Rio fan. So he was excited. The only good thing about this is just weeks prior he had his jaw wired shut so he couldn’t talk. So while he tried to cheer and laugh at me and my other friends he couldn’t.

Summerslam 2011 was a great event. Even watching it back on the network it was still every bit has good as it was when I saw it live. This event is one that I will always remember almost everything that happened. This event is one of my favorites and most enjoyable that I had ever gone to.
