I posted an article a few weeks back about Five ROH Wrestlers that WWE needs. I really enjoyed writing, as well as reading, list style articles so I decided to start a series called “The Next Five”. This article is about the next five wrestlers that I think will and/or should hold the IC title. They won’t be listed chronologically, I’m pretty sure I’d be setting myself up for failure if I tried to predict the next five in order. So here goes:
Fandango: Believe it or not, this has nothing to do with Steve Austin Tweeting that we’ll see Fandango w/ the IC belt within the next 6 months. It’s just sort of a no brainer. Fandango is unarguably getting over with the WWE audience right now. A guy who has his debut match at Wrestlemania against Chris Jericho and WINS, has clearly impressed some people behind the curtain in WWE. I think Fandango is going to make quick work of the Mid-Card Title scene and find himself in the upper card sooner than later. Whether or not he’ll stay there is to be seen, but it’s obvious that the Intercontinental Title is in the cards for FAAAN DAAAAN GOOOOOO in the near future.
Antonio Cesaro: This is me being optimistic. I truly hope that we’ve been seeing Cesaro on a losing streak because he’s in line for something bigger. I was upset to see him drop the US Title but let’s be real, it makes more sense for him to have the IC Title being from another continent and all. Now that he’s dropped it, I guess there’s not much hope of seeing the US Title turned into the European Title. Maybe he’ll do it with the IC Title once he gets it. It doesn’t make sense for him to take the belt from Barrett unless one of the two becomes a face between now and then, but I don’t think that’s likely. Maybe he’ll take it from Fandango since he’s been getting over like crazy, regardless of his attempts to be the super annoying, super arrogant heel.
Damien Sandow: I’m not sure if I’m the only one who’s noticed but Damien Sandow is more popular with the WWE Universe than Cody Rhodes. WWE attempted to break up The Rhode Scholars a few months ago and changed their minds quickly, but I think they’re going to make another attempt soon. Whether it be through Kaitlyn and the Bellas or another loss to Tons of Funk, we’re going to see Cody and Damien break up and break out as singles wrestlers this year. Damien Sandow as the Intercontinental champion makes sense. He could say things like the US Title is beneath him because the ignoramuses in the US are beneath him. Regardless, Damien will be at the top of the mid-card within a year without a doubt, you’re welcome!
Big E. Langston: The newest powerhouse in the WWE will likely follow in the footsteps of previous strongmen over the past few years, but hopefully won’t suffer the same fate. Guys like Kozlov, Mason Ryan, and even the Great Khali were pushed to the moon when they debuted but burned out in the blink of an eye. Big E has been on a slightly slower escalation plan, which is hopefully a good sign. An Intercontinental Title reign for Big E would help solidify him as something more than just an enforcer for Dolph Ziggler. It would also allow him to have something more than just squash matches like he’s been having (reminiscent of the other “powerhouses” I mentioned earlier). A steady title reign of any kind would be great for Langston, but the IC Title makes more sense than the US Title right now. His presence in the main event scene gives him a step up in the mid-card. We’ll see Big E with some gold around his waist soon for sure.
Evan Bourne: This is a shot in the dark, but I think within the next few months we’ll see the return of Evan Bourne. Having been out for so long, I see him coming back with a bit more determination, and hopefully a bit more direction. Evan could easily be the next big high-flyer if given the chance. With Rey and Sin Cara gone, someone needs to fill that top “little man” spot. Evan Bourne with the Intercontinental Title could be the first step in filling that void. There are a lot of “if”s in this pick, but I have high hopes for Evan.
