Gotta love the WWE. It’s filled with drama, athleticism and comedy. People call the WWE Universe a niche audience. Yet we outdraw major sporting events on a regular basis. Several arena and stadium attendance records belong to WrestleMania. Pay-per-view buys are regularly over 200,000 each show. John Cena and The Rock’s Twitter handles have some of the largest followings, much larger than most pro athletes and celebrities. WWE Monday Night RAW is the “longest weekly episodic television show in history.” We just had a one-thousandth show for goodness sake. Oh, by the way, Friday Night Smackdown is #2 on that list. Keep in mind, that Smackdown is taped on a Tuesday and still gets better ratings than most shows on TV on a Thursday/Friday night.
So what is it? What is it that has kept us coming back every Monday Night since 1993? What is it that had us tuned into UPN on April 29, 1999 for the debut edition of Smackdown! Let’s take a look, shall we…
Keep in mind that if you click on a highlighted link, you can watch a YouTube video of that star at their best!!!
1. The Characters
Man, where do we begin. The WWE has/had a superstar/diva for everyone. Hey, you like the all around good guy that can do no wrong and tells you to say your prayers and eat your vitamins? You were probably a fan of guys like the current John Cena and Hulk Hogan in the 1980′s. If you like the bad ass S.O.B., take sh*t from nobody, whip a man’s ass without thinking twice, then of course you love stars like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, the American Bad Ass Undertaker and of course CM Punk. Or are you the guy that loves the villain? You were probably a Evolution or even (to go back in the day) “Rowdy” Roddy Piper fan. There’s a person that everyone loves and that everyone can relate to.
2. The Storylines
Ok, we all know that wrestling is scripted. Let me repeat myself, wrestling is scripted. Not fake, like the non-wrestling fan would call it. We have the fantastic superstars and divas, but what makes us comeback every week, and what makes us remember moments are the storylines created by the stars. Remember the “Two Man Power Trip” when Stone Cold and Triple H (of all people) teamed up in the early 2000′s and ran WWE at one point, holding the Tag Titles, the Intercontinental Championship and the WWE championship? How about the
“Cenation Commander” “Chain Gang” Soldier John Cena and the legion of fans (I’m not just talking about the 5-12 age bracket either) he had from 2003-2008? Or the original incarnation of the legendary D-Generation X? These didn’t just last for a couple of weeks. These lasted for months or years! Memories that we still can find on YouTube, anytime, anyplace.
This is the beginning of a series that I am working on and I want your input. I’m calling on all writers of WWENews.net, all WNW readers and the WWE Universe to collaborate on this series! I look forward to getting to use actual quotes from the greatest fans in the world to describe what so many can’t seem to realize: why we love this business!
