Can you name me all of the current Divas on the WWE roster? Without leaving anyone out? Without accidentally leaving anyone in? I couldn’t. The current roster stands as: Divas Champion: Kaitlyn, followed by Aksana, Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, Cameron , Naomi, Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes, Layla, ,AJ Lee, Natalya Neidhart, and Tamina Snuka.
As usual, there seems to be nothing of interest going on in the division. And worse, no one seems to care. Clearly the focus of WWE is the male superstars. I would never dream of arguing that point. The male superstars should be the focus of WWE. But I believe they are missing the boat on some potential with the Divas Division.
WWE does occasionally tease some potential storylines… Kaitlyn has had some interesting matches with Tamina. These two Divas put on a great show together and have the potential to do some great things if given the chance. And, we have the return of the Bella Twins. I must admit, I was surprised to see them on the March 4 episode of Raw with the Rhodes Scholars. On the following episode of Smackdown, they attacked Cameron & Naomi. This could hint at a potential storyline involving Brodus Clay, “Sweet T” Tensai, Cameron & Naomi, Cody Rhodes, Damian Sandow, and the Bella Twins.
Could a WrestleMania mixed-tag match for all of these characters be in the works? I shudder to think of the last time WWE tried this. WrestleMania XXVII had the “Snooki Match” which pitted John Morrison, Trish Stratus, & Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi against Dolph Ziggler, Layla, & Michelle McCool. In case you don’t remember (I barely did), Snooki pinned McCool for the win. Without getting too sidetracked, I strongly dislike when WWE brings non-superstars to a Pay-Per-View to take a spot away from a deserving superstar. WWE did the same thing at WrestleMania XXVIII when Maria Menounos teamed with Kelly Kelly to face Beth Phoenix & Eve. And again, if you don’t remember, Menounos pinned Phoenix. Incidentally, of the six aforementioned Divas, only one remains with the company.
If WWE decides to pursue an angle involving Clay, Tensai, Cameron & Naomi, the Rhodes Scholars, and Bella Twins; I would hope for something better. Mixed tags get messy, and gets messier the more people involved. I suppose two matches could be held, one for the guys and one for the girls. But, WrestleMania time is precious. The best course of action would be to pit Clay & Tensai against the Rhodes Scholars with the teams accompanied by Cameron & Naomi and the Bella Twins, respectively. This contradicts my point, but it could set the ground work for a Diva rivalry that could carry over into Raw and Smackdown.
Outside of all that, what can be done with the division to make it interesting again? I applaud WWE for Kaitlyn’s run with the title. But, television-wise, most of these Divas are either escorts, or non-existent. If a match is televised, and that’s a big if, it is very short and it lacks any build whatsoever. The last running storyline was the attack on Kaitlyn and title reign of Eve Torres. It was bungled badly. It was inconsistent, forgotten about at times, and was just bad story telling. Prior to that, the only Divas storyline that comes to mind was the Piggy James angle that ended with a 20-second match and a cake to the faces of LayCool.
With the extended Raw and Main Event (which I still can’t watch because my cable company does not offer Ion), one would think WWE can squeeze in a little time for the girls. How about one quality match a week to get things started? When fan interest increases, add a little more. But, the main thing is to use some of the tv time we have to give the Divas a chance. Perhaps, when and if the WWE Network debuts, a timeslot could be dedicated to the Divas division. But, exposure on the main shows is still necessary to build interest. I just hope WWE can give them a little attention.
