Just go ahead and do away with the tag team titles! Last night Mark Henry destroyed the Uso Brothers. The tag team champs are two of the best singles wrestlers thrown together in a bickering (albeit very entertaining) team and the number one contenders are a long overdue World Heavyweight Champion and his sidekick rookie who has not competed against anyone!!!
Let’s go back a bit. I, Van Hammer (as obvious by my pseudonym) am an old school mark. I have been a fan of wrestling since the early 1980’s. I watched WWF exclusively until I lucked up on WCW Worldwide. Then I read PWI and was introduced to guys who would eventually make it to the big two. I got into Smokey Mountain, Global and MCW. Throughout that time I would watch the Brainbusters, Powers of Pain, Strikeforce, Beverley Brothers, and more b level teams as well as the Harts, Bulldogs, Natural Disasters, Road Warriors, Steiner’s, Doom, Hollywood Blondes and other A list teams do battle. Tag Team wrestling was a wrestling world in itself.
To see the current state of the tag teams is deplorable. What is worse is the IWC, who will voice displeasure over the lack of teams and in the same breath blame Teddy long when he revived the lost art on Smackdown. I watched a classically designed tag team in The Uso Brothers get destroyed as a pawn to the Mark Henry/Ryback feud. I cannot look at them as a credible contender after that any more than I can look at the champs or the number one contender. Pick a team from yesteryear and watch how unbelievably the deck is stacked in their favor when comparing them to the top teams today. My Kingdom for a Smoking Guns!!!
Don’t get me wrong. Years past there were teams thrown together. However, they made sense. They also competed and would rarely dominate the tag team division. Vader and Sid both utilized the same finisher and were mega heels so they would be the Masters of the Powerbomb. They feuded with the same faces they feuded with individually. Luger and Sting had history. It made sense they were a team. Hogan and (Pick a face) would team up for a few months and battle another thrown together team, rarely with tag title implications.
Writers often immerse themselves in a distraction when the words do not seem to flow. My distraction is music. So for the IWC (I include myself) and anyone who has been at a loss for words when thinking about the state of the once mighty tag team division, I offer Janet Jackson’s – Got Till Its Gone and a picture that sums up my feelings. Animal and Heidenreich pretending to be the Road Warriors.
